The AGV Pista GP RR racing helmet is the closest anyone can get to a MotoGP level helmet. Successor to the already incredibly popular AGV Pista GP R, the AGV Pista GPRR Helmet offers some slight improvements to bring the helmet back to the cutting edge of racing technology. Though there are not very many differences between the two helmets, the aerodynamics and liner of the GP RR have been significantly changed.
This full race motorcycle helmet is the helmet of choice of Moto GP rider Valentino Rossi, whose designs feature prominently in the GP RR range.
Though the helmet comes with a large price tag, the AGV Pista GP RR is the best of the best, featuring the best comfort and racing features AGV can produce.
However, based on our Road Test of these helmets, only the Shoei X-Spirit III (Marc Marquez’s helmet) has been able to give the AGV a run for its money in terms of quality, safety, and aerodynamics.
Shell
The outer shell of the AGV PistaGP RR is fully composed of lightweight carbon fiber. In a size S, the the GPRR only comes in at about 1450 grams. The race helmet is produced in 4 outer shell sizes, which will make sure that the best motorcycle helmet will give you the best fit.
The AGV Pista GP RR is ECE 22.05 certified. AGV has since released ECE22.06 certified variants of this model, which have this certification in the name of the helmet.
Though the Pista GP RR hasn’t been rated by SHARP yet, the AGV Pista GP R has been and it received 5/5 stars. Lastly, the AVG Pista GP RR is FIM racing homologated, which is one of the newest helmet standards, which is also a mandatory certification for MotoGP. This is a great certification to have since the FIM racing homologation standards also ensure the helmet will minimize rotational accelerations per FIM guidelines.
Ventilation
The ventilation on the AGV Pista GP RR has remained relatively unchanged from the Pista GPR. This means the helmet still uses AGV’s powerful IVS (integrated ventilation system) ventilation with 5 large front metal air vents and 2 rear extractors hollowed in the shell.
The 2 chin vents can be adjusted with a lever inside of the chin bar, and the internal chin channels distribute the airflow onto the visor. There are 3 additional brow vents that are covered in metal mesh and can be shut with rubber stoppers. Lastly, warm air will then leave the helmet through 2 additional air outlets near the spoiler.
To ensure maximum performance, AGV have made sure to test the sports helmet in a wind tunnel to make it as high ventilating and aerodynamic as possible.
Visor
Out of the box, the AGV Pista GP RR uses an Optical Class 1 AGV Race 3 visor, which has been anti-fog Pinlock prepared with the insert lens in the box. It has been positioned to provide a wide horizontal and vertical field of view so that you can focus on your racing. To help out on the track, the visor also includes tear off pins.
The visor’s patented visor lock system (VLS) reduces the chances of the visor accidentally opening. The visor also features an exclusive metal visor mechanism for quick visor changes.
Liner
The comfort liner of the AGV Pista GP RR carbon helmet features the most significant changes compared to the AGV Pista GP R. The liner includes MotoGP developed removable and washable interior padding. The cheek pads are made of Shalimar and microfiber in the comfort liner. They have been further treated to be moisture wicking and antibacterial.
To further distinguish itself, the Pista GP RR is prepared with a hydration system out of the box that you can easily attach to a water bag. The helmet also includes AGV’s 360-Degree Adaptive Fit, which means the liner is adjustable and you can adjust it to give you the most comfortable fit.
Lastly, for added safety, the helmet includes emergency quick release cheek pads, it uses a titanium double-D ring chin strap, and it includes ear plugs in the box for ear protection.
Summary
Though the AGV Pista GP RR helmet may seem like only a slightly upgraded version of the Pista GP R, at this high level of helmets, this is already a lot. AGV’s Pista helmets are among the best helmets in the world for racing due to their excellent combination of weight, aerodynamics, and comfort. There is a reason why Valentino Rossi himself also wears it.
